{"id":184,"date":"2005-10-19T21:39:15","date_gmt":"2005-10-19T21:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chriscurnow.com\/index.php\/2005\/10\/19\/caring_fulfillm\/"},"modified":"2005-10-19T21:39:15","modified_gmt":"2005-10-19T21:39:15","slug":"caring_fulfillm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chriscurnow.com\/?p=184","title":{"rendered":"Caring fulfillment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Catherine Fox, in this month&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afrboss.com.au\/magazine.asp?rgid=2\">BOSS magazine<\/a> reviews Anne Manne&#8217;s book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capersbookstore.com.au\/scripts\/shop_item.asp?by=cde&#038;item=pp0740\">Motherhood<\/a>.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m saddened by her undoubtably accurate observation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I&#8217;m happy to agree with Manne&#8217;s conclusion that our obsession with work has gone too far &#8211; after all, I co-wrote a book with [BOSS editor] Helen Trinca about this addiction, <em>Better than Sex: How a whole generation got hooked on work<\/em>, which she cites.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>But part of our thesis was that paid work had become the public stage in modern democracies and women wanted a chance to have a role in that forum and ideally to change the workplace too.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><b>It&#8217;s just a bit convenient to argue that caring work, which is admirable, can be as fulfilling as some of the jobs well educated women now have access to <\/b>[my emphasis] &#8211; it&#8217;s not just men who use work to justify &#8220;absence from family obligations&#8221;. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s no doubt a true observation, but it&#8217;s sad.
