{"id":47,"date":"2004-06-29T14:33:25","date_gmt":"2004-06-29T14:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chriscurnow.com\/index.php\/2004\/06\/29\/drucker_on_the\/"},"modified":"2004-06-29T14:33:25","modified_gmt":"2004-06-29T14:33:25","slug":"drucker_on_the","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chriscurnow.com\/?p=47","title":{"rendered":"Drucker on the Effective Executive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last month&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hbrweb.org\">Harvard Business Review<\/a> features a piece by Peter Drucker on <a href=\"http:\/\/harvardbusinessonline.hbsp.harvard.edu\/b01\/en\/hbr\/hbrsa\/current\/0406\/hbrsaLandingPage.jhtml;$urlparam$kNRXE2ULYRiR52NiwJYH5SF?_requestid=64022\">What makes an effective executive<\/a> [payment required] (also reprinted in this morning&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/afr.com\/articles\/2004\/06\/28\/1088392595767.html\">Australian Financial Review<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Drucker lists eight characteristics of an effective executive from his 65 years of observations.<br \/>\nTwo points on his list stood out for us:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They asked, &#8220;What is right for the enterprise?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>They thought and said &#8220;we&#8221; rather than &#8220;I&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Expanding on what is his second point, Drucker strikes a chord with us when he says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Effective executives&#8217; second practice, as important as the first, is to ask,<br \/>\n&#8220;Is this the right thing for the enterprise?&#8221; They do not ask if it&#8217;s right for the owners,<br \/>\nthe stock price, the employees, or the executives.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We have long argued the &#8220;Shareholder Value&#8221; as the only purpose of an organisation is a<br \/>\nmyth (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chriscurnow.com\/archives\/000081.php\">Beyond Selfishness<\/a>).<br \/>\nDrucker points out that is also bad for the enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>In another parallel with the Mintzberg article we referred to above, Drucker says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The final practice is this: don&#8217;t think or say &#8220;I&#8221;.<br \/>\nThink and say &#8220;we&#8221;.
