I have come to look forward to the AFR
\nBOSS<\/a> True Leaders List<\/em> each year. This is the fourth edition
\nof the list and I’m feeling that although it’s still a good read, the
\nformat is getting a little tired. (And I wish Catherine Fox wouldn’t
\nstart every article with “We’re over…” \u2014 this time it’s "We’re
\nover the heroic chief executive and the charisma factor…"<\/em>
\n\u2014 as though fads are something true leaders are slaves to. Can’t
\nwe have something deeper?)<\/p>\n

Fox’s introduction is really just a collection of quotes from panel
\nmembers without any real attempt to develop themes. I think I would
\nhave preffered some headings with the quotes listed underneath. Fox’s
\nslim prose just gets in the way.<\/p>\n

Editor Helen Trinca’s piece on Bill Clinton \u2014 The Leader
\nas Storyteller \u2014 <\/em>is a gem but all too short. Now that would
\nhave made a good introduction. The idea that a leader is someone who
\ntells a story that makes sense of what’s happening around the team.
\nThat would have given the feature some depth.<\/p>\n

Amanda Sinclair challenges with an overview of the central themes from
\nher book \u2014 Doing Leadership Differently<\/em> (a new edition
\nof which is due out in September).<\/p>\n

It’s also good to get an overview of the challenges facing our leaders
\nand how several of them deal with them.<\/p>\n

Overall I’m disappointed that what started out as a challenge to find
\na different kind of leader has become just another list trying to emulate
\na format. I’m not yet ready to ditch the True Leaders List but I hope
\nit gets a facelift next year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
